Nara Yakushiji Kyugoka Hachiman Shrine Amulet Namu Hachiman Daibosatsu
Located south of Yakushi-ji Temple in Nara, Kyugaoka Hachimangu Shrine was established in the Kanpyo era (889-898) by Abbot Eisho, who enshrined it here to protect Yakushi-ji Temple, having invited the deity from Usa Hachimangu Shrine in Oita Prefecture.
The name Kyugaoka (休ヶ岡), meaning resting hill, originates from a legend that when Monk Gyocho of Daian-ji Temple invited Hachiman Great Deity to Moto-Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine in the Jogan era, Hachiman Great Deity rested in this area. The Konjaku Monogatari Shu (Tales of the Past and Present) also recounts a story where the guardian Hachiman Great Deity protected the Golden Hall from fire, suggesting that this shrine has been deeply revered since ancient times.
At the festivals of Kyugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, monks from Yakushi-ji Temple participate and perform sutra chanting before the deity. Furthermore, during Yakushi-ji's events such as Shosho-e and Shuni-e, monks visit Hachimangu Shrine to pray for the protection of Hachiman Great Deity.
