This is one of the tools used in Shinto rituals for purification, known as a haraegushi or oonusa.

When you visit a shrine, you may have a stick with white paper attached waved over you for purification.
This is done to purify oneself before making a prayer to the kami (deities).

It is said that all people originally possess the same heart as the kami. However, as we live our lives, there are times when this is not apparent, and our hearts become clouded and accumulate impurities.

Purification is an important ritual for returning to the original divine heart that one possesses.

This item is finished entirely by hand.

We use Japanese cypress wood, 45cm in length and 1.8cm in diameter.
The shide (paper streamers) are cut from hosho paper to match the length of the wood.

Asagusa (hemp fibers) are placed inside the shide, and all the shide and asagusa are bundled together with asagusa.

The size is convenient for use at home.

A stand is included, so it can be displayed upright.

In the first place, hemp has the meaning of warding off impurity. It protects the body from evil and fosters good relationships.

The asagusa wrapped around the haraegushi used by priests at shrines for purification is also asagusa, and it is also used for the suzuo (the rope connecting to the bell rung when making an offering at a shrine).

The fact that the amulet from Ise Grand Shrine is called Jingu Oonusa (Jingu Oonusa, more accurately Oonusa) is also related to asagusa. (See photo)

In other words, it is also what connects us to the kami, and is therefore called a yori-shiro (object of reverence) of the kami.

Although hemp can be misunderstood, it possesses powerful purifying properties.

If you are feeling sluggish or experiencing pain due to attachment of unpurified spirits, it is said that touching the affected area with hemp as if to ward off evil can bring immediate relief.

The hemp used is high-quality Tochigi Prefecture hemp, sourced from a long-established hemp dealer.
