[About Gotokuji Temple]
Gotokuji Temple (Daikizan Gotokuji), located in a quiet area of Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, is known as the birthplace of the Maneki Neko (beckoning cat).
Its origin dates back to the early Edo period. One day, Naotaka Ii, the lord of the Hikone domain, was passing by on his way back from a falconry hunt when a cat at the temple gate beckoned him. As he followed the cat's gesture and stopped by the temple, a sudden thunderstorm broke out. Naotaka was deeply moved by his good fortune, as he was able to avoid the storm and enjoy a conversation with the monk thanks to the cat.
This encounter led to the temple's revival with the support of Naotaka Ii.
Subsequently, Gotokuji Temple built the Maneki Neko Hall to enshrine the cats that brought good fortune, calling them Maneki Neko-ji. The Maneki Neko Hall remains a power spot today, attracting many visitors from Japan and abroad who pray for family safety, business prosperity, and good luck.
In August 2025, American pop star Billie Eilish visited Gotokuji Temple during her trip to Japan and posted an image of a Maneki Neko on social media.
Following this, the number of foreign tourists visiting the temple increased even further from September onwards! Meow ??
[About the Lucky Charm]
This is a Maneki Neko-ji (beckoning cat charm), size #2 (approximately 6cm in height).
The Maneki Neko-ji at Gotokuji Temple does not hold a koban (gold coin) and raises its right paw.
The Maneki Neko-ji beckons people and brings connections or relationships, but it does not bestow good fortune itself.
Whether one can make the most of important connections is up to the individual.
The teaching is that if one has a feeling of gratitude and appreciation, good fortune will naturally come to that person. This is why it does not hold a koban and only raises its right paw.
