?? Description
This design features a digest of selected scenes from the Choju-giga scrolls, considered the oldest manga in Japan. The design utilizes the copperplate transfer technique, which was the mainstream painting method for Hasami ware during the Meiji and Taisho periods. Pigments for ceramics are printed on Japanese paper and then transferred to the ceramic body. By using a pigment rich in iron that tends to burn easily, we have created a textured atmosphere with variations in line strength.

Sobachoko Encyclopedia
BARBAR
The origin of the trapezoidal vessel known as Sobachoko (soba cup), which has been popular for 400 years to the present day with its shape remaining almost unchanged, is said to be Imari ware produced in Hizen Province (Saga and Nagasaki Prefectures) and shipped nationwide from Imari Port.
The original purpose of the soba cup was not for eating soba, but as a small bowl (mukōzuke) for serving sashimi, dressed dishes, and salted seafood at celebratory or formal meals. However, during the Edo period, soba restaurants became extremely popular among commoners. Soba cups were used not only as dipping sauce containers for soba but also as sake cups for pre-meal drinks known as sobamae, and they were distributed throughout the country, spreading rapidly.
As a result, a vast number of designs reflecting trends and culture were created.
Baba Shoten's products are made in Hasami Town, Higashisonogi District, Nagasaki Prefecture. We utilize the diverse techniques that the Hasami ware production area excels at, packing the craftsmanship and culture of artisans into small vessels to deliver a wide variety of soba cups.
