Stanley Bailey No 3 Type 11 Smooth Plane 1910-1918 Antique USA Early Iron
Stanley
Antique Stanley Bailey No. 3 Type 11 smoothing plane, manufactured in the USA circa 1910–1918. This is a genuine early Stanley Bailey No. 3 bench plane from the highly regarded Type 11 production period. The plane has been identified through multiple period-specific construction features, most notably the three patent dates cast into the bed behind the frog: MAR-25-02 AUG-19-02 APR-19-10 Additional Type 11 characteristics include the early low-style front knob, small brass depth-adjustment wheel, frog adjustment mechanism, BAILEY casting at the toe, No. 3 size designation and STANLEY-marked lateral adjustment lever. An especially interesting feature of this example is the cutter. It is an earlier genuine Stanley iron stamped: STANLEY PAT. AP'L 19, 92 The marking refers to Stanley's April 19, 1892 plane-iron patent. Because this cutter predates the Type 11 plane body, it is believed to be an older period replacement rather than the plane's factory-original cutter. The plane is therefore not being represented as 100% original. The plane retains the components pictured, including its cast-iron body, frog and adjustment mechanism, lever cap, cap iron/chipbreaker, Stanley cutter, wooden rear tote and early low-style wooden front knob. Condition: Antique, unrestored condition with expected oxidation, scratches, discoloration, finish/japanning loss and wear from more than a century of age and use. Wooden components show age-related wear. Please examine all photographs carefully...
