[New] Castanets mod. Bolero (Color: Black / Size: No. 5)

At Castañuelas Filigrana, we continue to uphold our tradition, says Lucía Álvarez Vera, granddaughter of Manuel Vera Martínez Filigrana, the artisan who invented fiber for castanets.

He invented fiber for castanets, and from that time on, they began to be called 'Filigrana' (meaning delicate filigree work). The castanets he created are known as 'Filigrana castanets,' so we decided to brand them with that name on the inside. The trademark 'Filigrana' was registered in 1967, but the name had already been in use for many years.

Incorporating fiber into castanet manufacturing resulted in a stronger striking sound and increased durability, bringing about a major revolution in the history of castanets. He also invented a special technique for hollowing out the castanets, making them easier to play. (Known as a special resonance box) Furthermore, he researched the origins of castanets for 40 years.

The Museum of Folk Arts of Seville features a section called Old Filigrana Workshop. On its walls hang photographs of top stars in the world of flamenco, including La Chunga, Carlitos Fernández Villalín, Luisillo, Juanita Reina, Caracolillo, Manuel Vargas, Merche Esmeralda, Pilar López, Lola Flores, Mariemma, Jitanillo de Bronce, and Rafael El Negro.
