Vintage Gucci BLACK Bamboo Handle Leather Oversized Hobo Bag Bamboo 1947

This is from the era when Gucci could make a  leather bag, put a beautifully curved piece of bamboo at the top, and consider the matter settled.  The body is supple black leather—large, uncomplicated and just structured enough to keep its composure. At the top, the unmistakable bamboo handle provides the contrast: warm, irregular and unmistakably Gucci, joined to the bag with restrained gold-tone hardware. No monogram canvas. No oversized logo. Nothing that needs explaining.  Gucci first began using bamboo for handbag handles in Florence in 1947, when postwar shortages forced its craftsmen to look beyond conventional materials. The bamboo was heated over an open flame, bent by hand, lacquered and baked, producing a handle whose variations meant that no two were quite identical. What began as improvisation became one of the house’s most enduring signatures.   This later interpretation takes that famous handle and puts it on something considerably more relaxed: an oversized black leather hobo with the easy proportions of a bag intended to be used rather than displayed.  The sort of Gucci that gets better when it stops looking new.
