This product is a Kai-awase (shell matching game) set of Kyo-beni (Kyoto rouge), a traditional Kyoto souvenir (includes a rouge brush).
The inside of the clam shells are decorated with gold leaf and maki-e (lacquer sprinkled with gold or silver powder), and traditional lipstick made from pigments extracted from safflower is applied inside.
Although originally lipstick, its beauty as a craft has led to it being used as an interior decoration or a small accessory case.
