Early Karuizawa carving designs often featured traditional Japanese motifs such as pine, bamboo, plum blossoms, peonies, irises, and chrysanthemums. Karuizawa carving began with artisans who practiced Nikko carving, catering to foreigners visiting Karuizawa for summer retreats. While early designs focused on traditional Japanese motifs, later, at the request of Westerners, cherry blossom and grape patterns became popular.
