Description
Beautiful antique infant bonnet/cap dating approximately to the late 19th or very early 20th century, likely circa 1890–1915. An especially interesting example of early infant clothing construction, the cap is made primarily from very fine ivory/cream cotton net or mesh, shaped and reinforced with narrow woven cotton bands. The bands form graceful diagonal and vertical lines across the sheer crown. The center opening features an old-fashioned lace-up closure with cotton cord, and long narrow ties extend from the lower sides. A wonderful little survivor for anyone interested in antique children’s clothing, heirloom sewing, historical costume construction or textile study. This piece is not being sold as wearable infant clothing. It is offered as an antique textile for display, collection, photography/prop use, pattern or construction reference, or heirloom-sewing inspiration. Antique condition with expected evidence of considerable age, including age toning, loose/frayed threads, wear around portions of the lacing and edges, and small areas of separation or weakness. Please examine photographs closely for condition and construction. It has not been restored. Approximate era: 1890–1915 / Edwardian era Fiber is not labeled; appears consistent with cotton. A lovely reference piece showing the remarkably delicate construction once used for infant garments. #Haberdashery #HeirloomSewing
