Antique Sterling Brooch Art Deco Morpho Butterfly Wing Laughing Cavalier 1920s

Antique English Art Deco sterling silver brooch featuring a portrait of a Laughing Cavalier-style gentleman over an iridescent blue Morpho butterfly wing, protected beneath a domed clear cover.  The portrait depicts a 17th-century cavalier gentleman with broad-brimmed hat, elaborate lace collar and mustache. The brilliant natural blue iridescence of the butterfly wing creates the background and changes in intensity with the light.  Reverse is stamped: ENGLAND STERLING PT 202213  Patent 202213 is associated with the English process used to incorporate Morpho butterfly wings into jewelry beginning in the 1920s. Other surviving pieces carrying the same patent number are documented as English sterling butterfly-wing jewelry.
