[Umetaro Azechi] 1902-1999
A Japanese printmaker active during the Showa era. He is known as the Mountain Printmaker for his numerous woodblock prints depicting mountain scenery. He was also active in publishing art books, bookbinding, and illustration. Initially aspiring to be an oil painter, he worked as a sailor and lithographic printer before joining the Printing Bureau of the Prime Minister's Office at the age of 24. It was there, while experimenting with materials available at work during his free time, that he began his journey into printmaking. He was influenced by artists such as Un'ichi Hiratsuka, Koshiro Onchi, and Senpan Maekawa. In the summer of 1937, he visited Karuizawa and was captivated by Mount Asama, which led him to focus on mountains as his subject matter and produce many works depicting mountain landscapes. After a period of solo work in Manchuria during the war, he began releasing his Mountain Man series after World War II. Following an injury to his right thumb and a severe burn, he created many works with family as their theme.
